Starting as an internal overview of projects related to V2_Lab’s research themes, the V2_Knowledgebase has grown into an extensive database of people, institutions and projects that is now freely accessible to anyone who wishes to use it. The knowledgebase is divided according to the Lab’s research themes: wearable technology, augmented reality and ecology.
These interactive graphical representations of the knowledgebases are created to provide users with a sense of the thematic relations that exist between the many different entries in the databases. In the graphical representation, every project and every descriptive tag of a project is visualized as a node. When projects share a tag a union edge is created between them. A force-directed algorithm is used to minimize the number of edges that cross and a colour code is used to indicate clusters. The result is an interactive map that allows exploring the different projects and their descriptive tags by moving through a network of nodes. The graphical representations are generated directly from the database so it is always up-to-date with the most recent changes in the databases. The visualizations are created using the gephi toolkit, java netbeans, and raphv-gexf.js
